Methods:DatafromDistrictLevelHouseholdSurvey,waivethree(DLHS-3)conductedin2007–08isutilizedinthe study.WeusedconditionallogitregressionmodelstoexaminetheassociationofPNCwithneonatalmortality.The matchingvariablesincludedbirthorderandtheageofthemotheratthebirthofthenewborn. Results:Thefindingssuggestnoassociationbetweencheck-upofnewbornswithin24hoursofbirthandneonatal mortality.However,theplacewherethenewbornswereexaminedwassignificantlyassociatedwithneonatal mortality.Moreover,findingsdorevealthatchildrenofmotherswhowereadvisedon‘keepingbabywarm (kangaroocare)afterbirth’duringtheirantenatalsessionsweresignificantlylesslikelytodieduringtheneonatal periodcomparedtothosechildrenwhosemotherswerenotadvisedaboutthesame. Conclusions:Thefindingsarerelevantbecause‘keepingbabywarm’isoneofthemostcost-effectiveandeasiest interventionstosavebabiesfromdyingduringtheneonatalperiod.Thoughrandomizedcontrolledtrialshave alreadydemonstratedtheeffectivenessof‘keepingbabywarm’,forthefirsttimethishasbeenfoundeffectiveina large-scalepopulation-basedstudy.ThefindingsareofimmensevalueforacountrylikeIndiawheretheneonatal mortalityratesareunacceptablyhigh.
