Abstract Background:Working-agedindividualsdiagnosedandtreatedforcancerrequiresupportandassistancetomake decisionsregardingwork.However,healthcareprofessionalsdonotconsiderthework-relatedneedsofpatients andemployersdonotunderstandthefullimpactcancercanhaveupontheemployeeandtheirwork.We thereforedevelopedawork-relatedguidancetoolforthosediagnosedwithcancerthatenablesthemtotakethe leadinstimulatingdiscussionwitharangeofdifferenthealthcareprofessionals,employers,employmentagencies andsupportservices.Thetoolfacilitatesdiscussionsthroughasetofquestionsindividualscanutilisetofind solutionsandminimisetheimpactcancerdiagnosis,prognosisandtreatmentmayhaveontheiremployment,sick leaveandreturntoworkoutcomes.Theobjectiveofthepresentarticleistodescribethesystematicdevelopment andcontentofthetoolusingInterventionMappingProtocol(IMP). Methods:Thestudyusedthefirstfivestepsoftheinterventionmappingprocesstoguidethedevelopmentofthe tool.Aneedsassessmentidentifiedthe‘gaps’ininformation/advicereceivedfromhealthcareprofessionalsand otherstakeholders.Theintendedoutcomesandperformanceobjectivesforthetoolwerethenidentifiedfollowed bytheory-basedmethodsandanimplementationplan.Adraftofthetoolwasdevelopedandsubjectedtoa two-stageDelphiprocesswithvariousstakeholders.Thefinaltoolwaspilotedwith38individualsatvariousstages ofthecancerjourney. Results:Thetoolwasdesignedtobeaself-ledtoolthatcanbeusedbyanypersonwithacancerdiagnosisand workingformosttypesofemployers.Thepilotstudyindicatedthatthetoolwasrelevantandmuchneeded. Conclusions:InterventionMappingisavaluableprotocolfordesigningcomplexguidancetools.Theprocessand designofthisparticulartoolcanlenditselftoothersituationsbothoccupationalandmorehealth-carebased.
