Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), c) and D). you should decide on the choice that best answers the question or completes the statement. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Out in the suburbs where I live, there are no sidewalks along the streets. Sidewalks are not considered part of pleasant living. And thats too bad, for sidewalks are nice things. Families get to know one another better when there are sidewalks. Without them, it is awkward to take a walk; a man walking along a sidewalk seems to have a purpose; a man walking along a street or across your front yard may be suspected. A sidewalk is fun. Its a place for children to ride tricycles before they reach the envied maturity of riding bicycles. When I was young, sidewalks were great for skaters. The experts would jump freely from the sidewalk to the street and back to the sidewalk again. There was usually a strip of grass on the sidewalk where the beginner, his arms waving wildly as he fought for balance, could make soft his fall when his wheels flew from under him. The sidewalk was a place for wagons in which the younger sister sat with fear delight as her brother on a bicycle pulled her. It was a place for show off. Boys passing the home of a girl would talk loudly and hit each other, hoping to impress. The sidewalk was a useful thing. Lying in bed on warm summer nights, you could hear echoing on the sidewalk the heavy boots of the man who walked on the railroad; the tired, dragging step of the boy who walked nights at the movie theater. Sidewalks gave new mothers a chance to escape the house and display their children to the admiration and approval of the older folks--traditional evidence that life was following the accepted course.
