TobiasPlieninger1,2,MirijamGaertner3*,CangHui3andLynnHuntsinger4 Abstract Background:Obscuredbythemoreprevalentdiscussionofintensificationandexpansionofagriculturalland,the impactsoftheabandonmentofmanygrasslandsandcroplandsoftheworldinrecentdecadeshavereceived limitedattentionintheliterature.LandabandonmentisacommonphenomenonintheMediterraneanBasin,a globalbiodiversityhotspot,butlittleisknownabouttheimpactsofthisprocessonbiodiversity.Toupscaleexisting case-studyinsighttoaPan-Mediterraneanlevel,weplantoperformasystematicreviewoftheeffectsofland abandonmentonplantandanimalrichnessandabundanceinpastures,arablelandsandpermanentcropsofthe MediterraneanBasin.Inparticular,weask(1)whichtaxonomicgroupsaremostaffectedbylandabandonment; (2)whetherdifferentspatialandtemporalscalesofstudiesinfluencespeciesrichnessandabundanceoutcomes; (3)whetherpreviouslanduseandcurrentanthropogenicimpactsonabandonedlandsdeterminedifferencesin thenumberandabundanceofspecies;and(4)whetherlandscapecontextmodifiestheimpacts. Methods:Ourreviewwillbebasedonsearchingscientificdatabasesaswellastheinternetforempiricalstudieson theeffectsoflandabandonmentonbiodiversityintheMediterraneanBasin.Studyselectionfollowsathree-stage processandincludesstudyqualityassessment.Extracteddatawillbesynthesizedthroughmeta-analysis.Resultswillbe presentedintheformofaquantitative(e.g.figuresindicatingeffectsizes,tablessummarizingheterogeneitystatistics) andnarrativesynthesis.Additionalaspectswillbeaddressedthroughmeta-regressionandsub-groupanalyses.
