El-Sayedetal.BiologyofMoodAnxietyDisorders2012,2:10 /content/2/1/10 Biology of Mood Anxiety Disorders REVIEW OpenAccess Epigeneticmodificationsassociatedwithsuicide andcommonmoodandanxietydisorders:a systematicreviewoftheliterature AbdulrahmanMEl-Sayed1,2*,MichelleRHaloossim3,SandroGalea4andKarestanCKoenen5 Abstract Epigeneticmodificationsarethosereversible,mitoticallyheritablealterationsingenomicexpressionthatoccur independentofchangesingenesequence.Epigeneticstudieshavethepotentialtoimproveourunderstandingof theetiologyofmoodandanxietydisordersandsuicidebybridgingthegapinknowledgebetweentheexogenous environmentalexposuresandpathophysiologythatproducecommonmoodandanxietydisordersandsuicide.We systematicallyreviewedtheEnglish-languagepeer-reviewedliteratureaboutepigeneticregulationinthese disordersbetween2001–2011,summarizingandsynthesizingthisliteraturewithrespecttodirectionsforfuture work.Twenty-onearticlesmetourinclusioncriteria.Twelvestudieswereconcernedwithepigeneticchanges amongsuicidecompleters;otherstudiesconsideredepigeneticregulationindepression,post-traumaticstress disorder,andpanicdisorder.Severalstudiesfocusedonepigeneticregulationofamine,glucocorticoid,and serotoninmetabolismintheproductionofcommonmoodandanxietydisordersandsuicide.Theliteratureis nascentandhasyettoreachconsensusabouttherolesofparticularepigeneticmodificationsintheetiologyof theseoutcomes.Futurestudiesrequirelargersamplesizesandmeasurementsofenvironmentalexposures antecedenttoepigeneticmodification.Furtherworkisalsoneededtoclarifythelinkbetweenepigenetic modificationsinthebrainandperipheraltissuesandtoestablish‘goldstandard’epigeneticassays.
