Methods:Serawerecollectedfrom176pigsaged8-12weeksoriginatingfrom24herdswithorwithoutproblems withdiarrhoeaandpoorperformanceinyounggrowingpigs.SerawereanalyzedbytheblockingELISAandby IFAT.Bayesianmodellingtechniqueswereusedtoaccountfortheabsenceofagoldstandardtestandtheresults oftheblockingELISAwasmodelledagainsttheIFATtestwitha“2dependenttests,2populations,nogold standard”model. Results:Atthefinallyselectedcut-offvalueofpercentinhibition(PI)35,thediagnosticsensitivityoftheblocking ELISAwas72%andthediagnosticspecificitywas93%.Thepositivepredictivevaluewas0.82andthenegative predictivevaluewas0.89,attheobservedprevalenceof33.5%. Conclusion:ThesensitivityandspecificityasevaluatedbyBayesianstatistictechniquesdifferedfromthat previouslyreported.Propertiesofdiagnostictestsmaywellvarybetweencountries,laboratoriesandamong populationsofanimals.Intheabsenceofatruegoldstandard,theimportanceofvalidatingnewmethodsby appropriatestatisticalmethodsandwithrespecttothetargetpopulationmustbeemphasized.
