AlvikandGr?holtBMCPediatrics2011,11:117 /1471-2431/11/117 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Examinationofthecut-offscoresdeterminedby theAgesandStagesQuestionnaireina population-basedsampleof6month-old Norwegianinfants AstridAlvik*andBeritGr?holt Abstract Background:Fewpopulation-basedsampleshavepreviouslypublishedperformanceontheAgesandStages Questionnaire(ASQ),arecommendedscreeningtooltodetectinfantdevelopmentaldelay.Theaimofthestudy wastoinvestigateperformanceontheASQinapopulation-basedsampleof6-month-oldinfants. Methods:Inthispopulation-basedquestionnairestudyfromOslo,Norway,the30itemASQ6month Questionnaire(N=1053)wereincluded,howeverwithoutthepictograms,andcomparedtotheNorwegian referencesample(N.ref)(N=169)andtoUScut-offvalues.Exclusioncriteriawerematernalnon-Scandinavian ethnicity,infantage5.0or7.0months(correctedage),twins,andbirthweight2.5kg.Cut-off=2.5 percentile(equivalenttomeanminus2standarddeviations).Pearson’sChisquareandMann-WhitneyUwereused tocompareitemsandareas,respectively,withN.ref. Results:ThereportedASQscoreswereloweronallbutoneofthe10significantlydifferentitems,andinallareas exceptPersonalsocial,comparedtotheN.refsample.Theestimatedcut-offvaluesforsuspecteddevelopmental delay(Communication25,Grossmotor15,Finemotor18,Problemsolving25andPersonalsocial20)werelower thantherecommendedAmerican(US)valuesinallareas,andlowerthantheNorwegianvaluesintwoareas. Scoresindicatingneedforfurtherassessmentwerereachedby13.8%or20.5%oftheinfants(missingitemsscored accordingtotheUSortheNorwegianmanual),andby33.8%or30.3%oftheinfantsusingtherecommendedUS ortheNorwegiancut-offvalues,inthispopulation-basedsample.TheFinemotorareademonstratedalarge variabilitydependingonthedifferentcut-offandscoringpossibilities.Bothamongtheitemsexcludingpictograms andtheitemsthatdonothavepictograms,approximatelyeverythirditemdifferedsignificantlycomparedtothe N.refsample. Conclusion:Thepsychomotordevelopmentalscoreswerelowerthaninthereferencesamplesinthisstudyof ASQ6monthQuestionnaire;toou
