Method:CaregiversofpatientsattendingtheChildandAdolescentClinicoftheNeuropsychiatricHospital,Yaba, Lagos[n=155]wereconsecutivelyrecruitedoveraone-monthperiod.Thecaregiverswereadministereda sociodemographicquestionnaire,theGeneralHealthQuestionnaire,ZaritBurdenInterview,andtheColumbia ImpairmentScale.ScoringontheChildren’sGlobalAssessmentScalewasdonebyclinicians. Results:Mostcaregiversobservedinthisstudywerefemales(80.5%),withmothersofthepatientsaccountingfor 78%ofallthecaregivers.Ahigherpercentageofthepatientsweremales(52.8%).Moderatetosevere/severe burdenwasrecordedamong25.2%ofcaregivers.Factorsassociatedwithcaregiverburdenwerepatient’slevelof functioning[r=0.489,p0.001],psychiatricmorbidityinthecaregiver[r=0.709,p0.001],levelofimpairment asassessedbythecaregiver[r=0.545,p0.001],andchild’slevelofeducation[t=3.274,p=0.001].Eachone independentlypredictedcaregiverburden. Conclusion:Thestudyrevealsahighlevelofburdenamongthecaregiversofchildrenandadolescentswith mentalhealthproblems.
