Alemayehuetal.BMCPregnancyandChildbirth2012,12:6 /1471-2393/12/6 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Factorsassociatedwithutilizationoflongacting andpermanentcontraceptivemethodsamong marriedwomenofreproductiveageinMekelle town,Tigrayregion,northEthiopia MussieAlemayehu1?,TeferaBelachew2?andTiztaTilahun2* Abstract Background:EthiopiaisthesecondmostpopulouscountryinSub-SaharanAfrica.TotalFertilityRateofEthiopiais 5.4childrenperwomen,populationgrowthrateisestimatedtobe2.7%peryearandcontraceptiveprevalence rateisonly15%whiletheunmetneedforfamilyplanningis34%.OverallawarenessofFamilyPlanningmethods ishigh,at87%.Theprevalenceoflongactingandpermanentcontraceptivemethods(LAPMs)inTigrayregionwas verylowwhichaccountsfor0.1%forimplantsandnousersforintra-uterinecontraceptivedevice(IUCD)and femalesterilization.MoreoveralmostallmoderncontraceptiveuseinEthiopiaisdependentonshortacting contraceptivemethods.Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoassessfactorsassociatedwithutilizationoflongacting andpermanentcontraceptivemethods(LAPM)amongmarriedwomenofreproductiveagegroupinMekelle town. Methods:AcrosssectionalcommunitybasedsurveywasconductedfromMarch9-20,2011.Multistagesample techniquewasusedtoselecttheparticipantsforthequantitativemethodswhereaspurposivesamplingwasused forthequalitativepartofthestudy.Binarydescriptivestatisticsandmultiplevariableregressionsweredone. Results:Thestudyconsistedofquantitativeandqualitativedata.Fromthequantitativepartofthestudythe responserateofthestudywas95.6%.OfthequalitativeparttwoFGDswereconductedforeachmarriedwomen andmarriedmen.64%ofthemarriedwomenheardaboutLAPMs.Morethanhalf(53.6%)ofthemarriedwomen hadnegativeattitudetowardspracticingofLAPMs.TheoverallprevalenceofLAPMsusewas12.3%however;there werenousersforfemaleormalesterilization.Themainreasoncitedbythemajorityofthemarriedwomenfor notusingLAPMswasusinganothermethodofcontraception360(93.3%).Motherswhohadhighknowledge were8timesmorelikelytouseLAPMsascomparedwiththosewhohadlowknowledge(AOR=7.9,95%CIof (3.1,18.3)
