The prevalence of speci?c Immunoglobulin E (IgE) to food allergens was investigated in 20 laboratoriesindifferentregionsofLebanonbyanimmunoblotassay over a 1 year period. Clinical correlation was determined in two universityhospitals.Therewere1842patientswithsuspectedIgE- mediated food allergic reactions tested for speci?c IgE upon their physician’srequest.Clinicalcorrelationwasdonein93patients.We identi?ed386outof1842(20.95%)patientswithpositivespeci?c IgE to food allergens. The clinical presentations were cutaneous, digestive, and anaphylaxis. The major cause of allergy was cow’s milk in infants and young children, hazelnut and wheat ?our in adults. Although speci?c IgE to peanut in infants, children, and adults were higher than for sesame, peanut-induced allergic reac- tionsweremild,incontrarytosesamewhereanaphylaxiswasthe onlyclinicalmanifestation.Recently,sesamehasbeenrecognizedas an increasingly frequent and potentially severe allergen. Further studies with double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge are neededtoestablishtherealprevalenceoffoodallergyinLebanon, andtodeterminethemostcommonallergenstakinginconsideration thenutritionalhabitsofourpopulation.
