Using Chinese outward FDI data, Tobit models and zero-inflated models are specified to estimate the effects of agglomeration effect and location advantage on the scale of Chinese outward FDI and a count measure of Chinese multinationals’ number across 186 countries. The results indicate that agglomeration effect and location advantage are important factors affecting the Chinese direct investment in the world and agglomeration effect weakens the effects of location factors. Moreover, the explanatory power of the agglomeration effect improves over time. The findings show that the degree of industrialization, level of stock of inward FDI, infrastructure quality and service related agglomeration effect have more effects than location factors on the location choice of developing countries.
