In most projects, the stability is generally forecasted and assessed through analyzing surrounding rock deformation. But there are many problems such as low precise resulted from the complexity and diversity of the time series of rock mass displacement. Thanks to chaos theory, these problems would be well solved. In the paper, the characteristic of time series curve for the tunnel surrounding rock and the principle of chaotic models such as global model, modified global method, local method were introduced. From the forecasting application of the methods into a tunneling practice, local method was found to be having minimum total error followed by combined model, but inconvenient to operate and complicated in computing. So the combination model, which is a comprehensive model combined local model and global model, was rationally brought up and applied into solving a nonlinear engineering problem, what’s more, proved not only precisely but also easy to handle. Therefore, when forecasting tunnel rock mass deformation, the combined model would be more likely to be adopted widely rather than other models related.
