Abstract Objective Oneoftheearliestchangesobservedinretinalmicrovesselsindiabetic：retinopathyistheselective
lossofintramuralperieytes．Ourpreviousstudywastoinvestigatecellularoxygenicmetabolism，buttherelationshipofsuperoxide
dismutase(SOD)，acriticalenzymeinmaintainingcellularoxygenicmetabolizingbalance，withpericytesapoptosishasnotbeen
reported．WeinvestigatedtheactivityofSODbydetectingadvancedglyeationendproducts(AGE)，whichmightbeinvolvedinthe
disappearanceofretinalperieytes． Methods Culturedbovineretinalmicrovaseularpericytes(BRPs)wereexposed1ovarious
concentrationsofadvancedglycationendproducts(0．47，1．88，7．5pmlol／L)for4days．Thepericytesapoptosiswasassayedby
fluorescenceactivatedcellsorting(FACS)，andtheSODactivityandtheeffectofSOD onapoptosisandBcl一2／Baxratiowere
furthermeasured． Results Theresultsshowed thattheBRPsapoptosiswasinduced significantlybyAGE inadose-dependent
mannercomparedwith controls (r=0．878，P 001)．ApoptosisofBRPswasnegativelycorrelatedwithadecreaseof
intracellularSODactivity(r=一0．878，P0．01)．20U／LSODcouldreduceAGE-inducedapoptosisby47％ andim：reasethe
Bcl一2／Baxratioby25％ and72％ (attheconcentrationsofAGE0．47~mol／Land7．5~mol／Lrespectively)． Conclusion
thepericytelossindiabeticretinopathyisinvolved inanapoptoticinductionandthereductionofSOD isassociatedwith apoplosis
ofBRPs．Theseresultsprovidenew therapeuticapproachtodiabeticretinopathy．
