Text Analysis-Blood and Body Fluids Blood and body fluids are two important concepts in TCM. (Differing from each other,) both of them have a common source. The following passage is a brief introduction about them. Text Analysis Blood (is formed from) the essential qi (derived from the food by the stomach and spleen) [that] becomes red blood after transformation by construction qi and the lung. The Magic Pivot (Lingshu, Jueqipian) states: The middle jiao takes in qi, extracts its essence, and turns it into the red substance that is blood.“(中焦受气，取汁，变化而为赤，是谓血.) Text Analysis In another passage it states: (From the qi [that] the middle jiao takes in), it produces waste and distills fluids from [which] it extracts the essence. This then flows into the lung channel [where] it is transformed into blood [which] furnishes the needs of the body. Its preciousness (is unexcelled by) anything. It flows through the blood vessels and is known as construction qi. Text Analysis “中焦之所受气者，泌糟粕，蒸津液，化其精微，上行于肺脉，乃化而为血，以奉生身，莫贵于此，故独得行于经隧，命曰营气。 Text Analysis After it has formed, blood flows through the vessels and is pumped around the whole body by the heart, whence the phrase the heart governs the blood. (心主血” ) // The blood is stored and regulated by the liver. “[When] the body moves, the blood flows through the vessels; [when] (at rest), the blood returns to the liver where it is stored. For this reason it is said that the liver stores the blood. (“肝藏血”) // The blood (is prevented from) spilling out of the vessels by the containing power of the spleen.
