Abstract
Inordertounderstandrecentchangesininter-annualtrendsinwaterareaofDongtingLakeandtoex-
plorethefactorsaffectinght echanges，hteSeptemberLandsatdaat during1996-2014yearswerepro-
cessedbyNormalizedDifferenceWaterIndex(MNDWI}，andthewaterinformationofmainDongting
Lakewasexrtacted，ht ewaterareaswerecalculatedbyARCGIS，andhtevariationwasanalyzed．There-
suitsshow ht at：thewaterareaofmainDongtingLakeisoveralldecreasing．Thepossiblecausesofits
shrinkingbyprelim inaryanalysisaremainlycontinuousdepositionofsediment,lotsofreclaim ingland
from lakes，dramaticchangesinclimateandwaterstorageoftheThreeGorgesreservoirandsoon．
