To explore the translation of kinship terms from the view of relevance theory is meaningful both in theory and in practice. The study of kinship terms also has extensive practical significance. As a vital part of addressing system, kinship terms have already constituted a complete structure. The research of kinship terms can help clarify the internal relationship between various addressing terms and comprehend the context. It can also give us an aid to investigate the dynamic relationships within culture, profession, age and other social factors. Using kinship terms is an important social behavior and it’s quite necessary for us to use proper kinship terms in suitable situations in the same culture or in cross-cultural communication. The thesis is made up of five chapters. The first chapter gives a general introduction to the study. The origin of the study, the significance and objective and the basic idea of the study are stated. The second chapter is an overview of the study on kinship terms. There is an introduction to the theoretical development and researching conditions at home and abroad concerning the chosen topic. The third chapter as the body part first makes a comparison between Chinese and English kinship terms to find out the discrepancies, then probes the outlet of equivalent translation. The fourth chapter relates to the translation of Chinese and English kinship terms and seeks the concrete translation
