Consequence of transformation of society brought by industrialism and technology in the course of the 19th century. American modernists were influenced by psychoanalysis of Freud, stream of consciousness of James Joice and archetypal symbol (原型象征理论)of Jung. Modernism is a cultural movement that generally includes the progressive art of architecture, design, literature, music, painting and other visual arts. Modernism gained prominence during and after WWⅠ, and flourished in Europe and American throughout the 1930s and 1940s. (international trends) American Modernism covered a wide variety of topics including race relations, gender roles, and sexuality. Modernists tried to break away from traditions and conventions through experimentation with new literature forms, devices and styles. ①. Modernism dramatized discontinuity and imminent severance from the past while making determined efforts to use the past, its values and artistic forms by incorporating them in new literary production. ②. Modernism had a sense of fragmentation in social communities and the fragmentation within the individual himself. ③. Strong and conscious break with traditional forms, perceptions, and techniques of expression, and its great concern with language and all aspects of it medium. Modern poetry: imagism 意象派 Imagism is a poetic movement as reaction to Victorian and Edwardian poetry in England and the US, which flourished from 1908 to 1917 T. E. Hulme founded a Poets’ Club in 1908 The most effective means to express the momentary impressions is through “the use of one dominant image” Ezra Pound: An image is “that which presents an intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time”.
