About the author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson(查尔斯·路特维奇·道奇森) (?27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898), better known by his?pen name,?Lewis Carroll(刘易斯·卡罗尔)?,was an English writer,?mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon(英国国教的执事)and photographer. His most famous writings are?Alice‘s Adventures in Wonderland?and its sequel?Through the Looking-Glass, as well as the poems “The Hunting of the Snark” and “Jabberwocky”, all examples of the genre of?literary nonsense(荒唐文学). 2.Rhetorical devices Personification: In this novel, a lot of peculiar, anthropomorphic(赋予人性的) creatures presented in the fantasy world, such as the talking rabbit, the smoking caterpillar(毛毛虫), the dancing lobsters(龙虾) and the like. Alice‘s Adventures in Wonderland is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym(笔名) Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. 1.Descriptive modification First of all, a lot of descriptive modification have been included in the story, such as “a white rabbit with pink eyes”, “in a languid(倦怠的), sleepy voice” and so on, which make the novel more concrete and visual. For example, in chapter 1, “Down the Rabbit-Hole”, in the midst of shrinking(收缩), Alice worries about what final size she will end up as, perhaps “going out altogether, like a candle”; this pondering reflects the concept of a limit.
