By 2009, the southeastern lake had disappeared and the southwestern lake retreated to a thin strip at the extreme west of the former southern sea.;The Gulf of Mexico oil spill ;Bhopal disaster ; The spill caused extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats and to the Gulfs fishing and tourism industries. By 9 July 2011, roughly 491 miles (790 kilometers) of coastline in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida remained contaminated by BP oil;A leak of methyl isocyanate gas and other chemicals from the plant resulted in the exposure of hundreds of thousands of people. The toxic substance made its way in and around the shantytowns located near the plant.;Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant ;As a result, reactor No. 4 was completely destroyed and has since been enclosed in a concrete and lead sarcophagus to prevent further escape of radiation. ;Large areas of Europe were affected by the accident. The radiation cloud spread as far away as Norway, in Scandinavia ;the government of Madhya Pradesh has confirmed a total of 3,787 deaths related to the gas release.
