Personality test Find your “true color” YOUR TRUE COLOR What is the best trait (characteristic) of you personality? The worst or most challenging? Did you think this test accurately described your personality? PART I PARTS OF A SPEECH EVERY SPEECH NEEDS… A specific goal (what you want the audience to do) A thesis (why you want them to do it) An introduction, body, and conclusion Good content (what you say) Good delivery (how you say it) LISTENING PRACTICE We are going to listen to a short speech (3 minutes) by Alan Watts, a philosopher and writer. He was born in London in 1915 and passed away in 1973. Please take notes and answer the following questions – What is Watts’s goal? What is his thesis? What did you think of the content and delivery of his speech? READING Please read the speech by Watts. Do NOT write on the papers! What is Watts’s goal? What is his thesis? PART II PUBLIC SPEAKING TIPS TIPS Relax Know your material Practice Know your audience and the room Be enthusiastic Use appropriate body language and gestures GESTURES Symbolic Gestures communicate words, numbers, position. For example: A raised hand signals for a stop A thumbs-up showing you agree Three fingers for the number three Pointing to show a position – up, down, behind, beside GESTURES Descriptive Gestures communicate an idea or movement.
