1 Assess the main features of managerial work and explain/outline the main roles and activities of managers within Scotia Airways.
Five categories from Fayol:
Planning — providing a clear methodology for achieving the targeted expansion.
Commanding — ensuring employees are directed to enable them to fulfill their duties
Controlling — keeping managers and departments within budget
Co-ordinating — ensuring resources are at the correct airport to meet service demands
Organising — developing systems to manage health and safety requirements
Roles: Decisional — which routes will the airline expand
Informational — ensuring that employees understand the implications of any expansion for their job security
Interpersonal — displaying leadership and liaising with employees concerning the change in culture.
2 Describe the value of two mechanisms that could be used to measure managerial performance and justify how each could be used to assess managerial performance in Scotia Airways
Productivity levels/efficiency — increased the number of customers at a lower cost ratio to illustrate growth and improved efficiency
Motivation and morale of staff — staff satisfaction survey to establish morale and to promote staff feedback and involvement
Success of their training and development — evaluation of investment of training can be measured by customer satisfaction or in conjunction with productivity levels
level of staff turnover — as the expansion of Scotia occurs and more staff are recruited, the level of staff turnover would provide a primary indicator of staff morale and career development opportunities. This would be particularly true as the culture of Scotia develops during its growth period.
Absenteeism — health and well-being of staff are indicators of a well managed workforce and the failure to manage staff appropriately will have a negative impact upon attendance. This would be particularly true as the culture of Scotia develops during
