Unit 14Packing Text A “ Packing is an art.” “ Packing or container is part of the product.” “ Packing should help identify the product inside”. This is true. Usually, buyers identify the product through package. Packing has become more and more important in competing for external markets. One of its basic purposes is to protect the product. This is important because the product may have to withstand a lot of handling during transportation between the factory and the consumer. The second purpose in packing is to make the product look appealing to the buyers. Products that are packed in such a way as to catch the consumer’s eye will help to sell. Other common purposes of packing are to provide information about the product inside, make it easy to carry the product, and provide convenience in using the product. Therefore, more and more people, not only manufacturers, have come to realize the importance of packing. Experience has shown that the packing used in transportation goods for home trade is not usually suited to foreign shipping. Most foreign shipping takes many weeks or months to reach its destination and frequently undergoes rough handling in loading and unloading. So the exporter has to give considerable attention to the packing of the goods to be shipped abroad. It is his duty to pack the goods in accordance with the relevant terms in the sales contract and in a manner which assures their safe arrival and facilitates their handling in transit and at the place of destination. Neglect in this respect will invariably result in damage or in delay in the delivery of the goods and might give cause to the overseas customer to reject the goods or to claim damages.
