parts in CET, listening comprehension experienced the greatest changes either in its
content or its structure. In total, the weight of the listening comprehension increased
from 20% to 35% of the total, and the time spent on this part has increased from 20
minutes to 35 minutes. In detail, the second part, listening to passages and answer
some multiple choice questions, is reserved; the old Conversation part is divided into
two parts, Short Conversation and Long Conversation, and a new part, named
Compound Dictation is added.
Apart from emphasizing that the objectives of College English teaching are to
improve students’ comprehensive skills, especially listening and speaking abilities,
College English Curriculum Requirements (trial version) (2004) also states that
modern information technology should be sufficiently used to explore the
internet-based English listening and speaking teaching mode. In order to be further in
accordance with College English Curriculum Requirements, CET undertook
experimental reform again in 2008 and internet-based CET4 pilot tests have been
carried out in 50 universities and internet-based CET6 pilot tests were first
administered in December, 2009.
In this reform, it is also the listening component that adopted the greatest
changes. It is not only a reform of test content and structure but also a reform of
testing method. At present, the internet-based CET is still at pilot-test stage, and the
number of students who took it is limited, so most of front-line teachers and some
scholars are not familiar with this new form of CET and may even
