He found a pile（堆）of English novels, which aroused(激发) his curiosity when he was 4. The key to the treasure-house of literature had been put in his hand. ;In 1821 the Dickens family moved to a poor quarter in London. Mr. Dickens was heavily in debt and did not know which way to turn for money. Finally he was taken to the Marshalsea Prison, London, for debt. （债务监狱 ） Shortly afterwards Mrs. Dickens and the younger children went to the prison, too, to join the father. ;The 12-year-old Charles was sent to work in a factory in the East End of London. Work there began at eight in the morning and ended at eight at night. Sundays he spent at the prison, and during the week he was out working all day. ;His miserable（悲惨的）life at the factory left an everlasting（永恒的）, painful brand（烙印） on the boy’s mind.
