Poem Appreciation A Red, Red Rose Poem Appreciation Warming-up: How do you usually express your feelings to your love? What do you usually compare your love to? Lyrical: A red, red rose On First Reading: 1. How does the poet express his love? 2. What des the poet compare his love to? 3. What do you think of this poem? A red, red rose O, my luve is like a red, red rose, Thats newly sprung in June; O, my luve is like the melodie, Thats sweetly playd in tune. ? As fair art thou, my bonie lass, So deep in luve am I; And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a the seas gang dry Robert Burns ( 1759~1796) Burns is the national poet of Scotland. His songs are Scottish to the core. Robert Burns an excellent native poet of Scotland his poems written in the Scottish dialect; many lyrics praising nature, love, and friendship, such as “A Red, Red Rose,” “My heart’s in the Highland”. His “Auld Lang Syne” (Old Long Ago) which have been sung as a parting song in many places of the world in different languages. Summary This is one of Burns’ popular love lyrics and is also a good example of how the poet made use of old Scottish folk poetry and created immortal lines by revising the old folk material. The extreme simplicity of the language and the charming rhythmic beat of the verse express better than anything else the poet’s true sentiments toward his beloved. Questions: 1. What is the theme of the poem? Theme: to express strong affection to his love, swearing that he will love her for ever. 2. What is the structure of the poem? Structure: 1.Stanza 1: compare his sweet heart as a red rose and sweet music. 2. Stanza 2-3 : swear that he will love her for ever, and assure that he will never change his heart. 3.
