of Self-Reliance Presenter: 梁乐乐 The Writing Style Content Scene 1 Scene 2 Scene 4 Writing Style Introduction Share Quotations Background Scene 3 Introduction Self-Reliance is an essay that urges readers to trust their own instincts and ideas rather than automatically following popular opinions and conforming to the wills of the majority. Self-Reliance was first published in his 1841 collection, Essays: First Series. ① ② Scene 1 Scene 2  The first hint of the philosophy that would become?Self-Reliance?was presented by Emerson as part of a sermon in September 1830 a month after his first marriage.?His wife Ellen was sick with?tuberculosis,?and as Emersons biographer Robert D. Richardson wrote, “Immortality had never been stronger or more desperately needed!” She died at the age of 19 on February 8, 1831. Writing Background Lectures and journals as sources From 1836 to 1837, Emerson presented a series of lectures on the philosophy of history at Bostons Masonic Temple. These lectures were never published separately, but many of his thoughts in these were later used in?Self-Reliance?and several other essays ?Throughout his life, Emerson kept detailed journals of his thoughts and actions, as a source for many of his essays. Such is the case with Self-Reliance, which includes materials from journal entries dating as far back as 1832. Self- Reliance was first Published first in his 1841 collection: Essays: First Series.
