There would be obvious benefits―clean air, lush forests, healthy oceans―and we wouldn’t now be facing the biggest mess ever to hit humanity, global warming. Polar bears wouldn’t be starving. We’d already be in the throes of the greatest clean green industrial revolution the planet has seen. 　　Of course, there would be repercussions I never considered before, things that might rub even a rabid environmentalist like me the wrong way. For instance, imagine if everyone drove a hybrid. Try finding your car after a concert. “I’m in parking section A-7 between the Prius and the ... Prius.” At home, energy conservation could be a real challenge. You’d have to turn off all your lights, and when you went out of town, instead of putting your lamps on a timer to keep away thieves, you’d hire someone to stand on the lawn and yell, “These people are at home, don’t rob them.” 　　If disposable cups and containers―the kind that won’t degrade in a million years―were no longer in production, it would also mean an end to takeout. That’s right, no more picking up Italian on the way home, and no more ordering in, either. People would have no choice but to go out and be social in restaurants or, dare I say, cook. Also, once you were at the restaurant, no takeout containers would mean no leftovers to bring home. People would start forcing themselves to eat all the food on their plate―“Finish up, Stevie, they’ll just throw it out.” Obesity is already a real problem in this country, though I guess if the lights were all out nobody would notice. 　　In an effort to cut back on water waste and harmful fertilizers, golf courses would all be closed.
