Date of Defence: July, 2014 Degree-Conferring-Institution: Harbin Institute of Technology 万方数据 Abstract Abstract Due to the increasing population in urban centres, there is a shortage of land for necessary utilities. In order to maximize the use of available land, underground structures have been constructed to provide the necessary utilities. There are excessive deformations involved in the excavations. Different ways of minimizing the deformations have been used like the observation, jet grouting and installation of struts. However, these do not consider the design of the structure as a way of minimizing the lateral pile deflections and vertical ground movements. The aim of this research is to develop a design methodology that will minimize the lateral pile and vertical movements of the retaining wall system in top down construction Initially, retaining wall systems were modeled and they comprised of H -steel piles, Concrete
