ERGONOMICS We have all heard the term, but do we really know what it is? Ergonomics The study of the relationship between people and their work environment with regards to reducing injuries and/or illnesses (science-based definition). These injuries and/or illnesses are commonly known as Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs) and Back Injuries. Fitting the jobs and tasks to the abilities of the people performing the work (layman’s definition). Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs) Damage to the muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, or Circulatory System of the body caused by repeated small physical injuries to the body. CTDs are not normal outcomes of work. It takes weeks, months, years, or never to overcome the problem associated with CTDs. Common CTDs Tendinitis Bursitis Synovitis Tenosynovitis Ganglionic Cysts DeQuervain’s Disease Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Vibration-induced White Finger Cubital Tunnel Syndrome Pronator Teres Syndrome Radial Tunnel Syndrome Epicondylitis Bicipital Tenosynovitis Rotator Cuff Tendinitis Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Myofacial Disorders Trigger Finger Etc. Signs and Symptoms of CTDs Inflammation Swelling Pain in a body part Change in skin color Ringing in ears Tingling Numbness Aches Decreased range of motion Burning pain Clumsiness in hand activity Decreased grip strength Symptoms get worse at night Symptoms get better on days off Aching heaviness in arm(s) Neck Pain Health Education 101 Tendinitis and Tenosynovitis Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Back Injuries / Illnesses Disk Problems in the Back Biomechanics of Lifting Biomechanics of Lifting Muscle Forces Example 1 - Upper body at 0 inches and load at 8 inches Example 2 - Upper body at 6 inches and load at 20 inches Example 3 - Upper body at 15 inches and load at 20 inches Note: Internal Abdominal Pressure is not accounted for in these examples.
