What is Verbal Communication? Silence in Different Cultures “Will?you?marry?me?” Silence? in?English?would?be?interpreted?as?uncertainty in?Japanese?it?would?be?interpreted?as?acceptance in?Igbo (an ethnic group of southeastern Nigeria)it?would?be?considered?as?a?denial?if?the?woman?was?to?continue?to?stand?there?and?acceptance?if?she?ran?away. Different Views on Silence Easterners generally interpret silence positively as respect, obedience, agreement, thoughtfulness. China: He who knows doesn’t speak and he who speaks doesnt know. Japan: out of mouth comes all evil. Different Views on Silence Westerners generally interpret silence negatively as indifference, anger, hostility, disagreement, shyness, embarrassment, ignorance, boredom, and coldness. English: Break the silence Jewish:?stress?social?interaction?among?friends?and?family, there?is?often?very?little?silence. “One?should?not?be?alone,?even?in?heaven.” Possible Historical Origins Taoism: “The Tao that can be spoken of is not the eternal Tao.” Lao Tzu: “Sincere words are not fine, fine words are not sincere.”信言不美,美言不信。 Eastern countries like Japan, Korea and China, spoken words are viewed with suspicion and disregard, superficiality.
