A message to families … from Superintendent Larry Nyland Plan ahead for student success. You’ve got a student in high school! The next several years will be challenging but also exciting. You’ll see your student develop plans for the future, graduate from high school and embark on the journey of college and career. But, what can you do? How can you help your student do well in the high school years and prepare for the future? Below are some tips from the State Board of Education Higher Education Coordinating Council: • Encourage your student to participate in class, turn in homework on time, and focus on learning • Review your student’s high school course plan • Have your student consider taking the WASL as a 9th grader • Learn about what the school offers to help prepare your student for college and career • Learn about financial aid options for families for college • Encourage your student to take the PSAT (a college entrance exam) • Encourage your student to become involved in a volunteer service activity Be involved in your student’s education. Developed through extensive study, research and travel, and collaborative discussion, these guiding principles represent our core values and purposes. They serve as the filter through which important decisions are made, particularly when individual interests and desires come in conflict with foundational goals. The State Board of Education says: “The purpose of the diploma is to declare that a student is ready for success in postsecondary education, gainful employment, and citizenship, and is equipped with the skills to be a lifelong learner”.
