Why?has?it?become?so?popular?? The three eras of English history Ancient ?English. Middle English Modern English Ancient English AD450—AD1100 The history of the English language began over 1500 years ago in the north of Europe. The English language is a result of the invasions of the island of Britain. Ancient English AD450—AD1100 Through the years, the Saxons, Angles and Jutes mixed their different languages. The result is what is called Anglo-Saxon or Old English. Old English is extremely difficult to understand. Only a few experts can read this earliest form of English. The most famous written work is called Beowulf. It is the oldest known English poem. Vikings The next great invasion of Britain came from the far north beginning about one thousand one hundred years ago. Fierce people called Vikings raided the coast areas of Britain. They brought to English many words that begin with "sk", like "sky"and "skirt". Middle EnglishAD1100—AD1500 In 1066, the Normans conquered England. The Normans were a French-speaking people from Normandy in the north of France. The country now had three languages: French for the nobles, Latin for the churches and English for the common people.
