《美国文学》课件五

Freneau’s position in American literature She Dwelt Among Untrodden Ways ----by William Wordsworth She dwelt among the untrodden ways Beside the springs of Dove, Maid whom there were none to praise And very few to love: A violet by a mosy stone Half hidden from the eye! ---Fair as a star, when only one Is shining in the sky. She lived unknown, and few could know When Lucy ceased to be; But she is in her grave, and, oh, The difference to me! By Nature’s self in white array’d, She bade thee shun the vulgar eye, And planted here the guardian shade, And sent soft waters murmuring by; Thus quietly thy summer goes, Thy days declining to repose. Smit with those charms, that must decay, I grieve to see your future doom, They died—nor were those flowers less / more gay, The flowers that did in Eden bloom; Unpitying frosts, and Autumn’s power Shall leave no vestige of this flower. From morning suns and evening dews At first thy little being came: If nothing once, you nothing lose, For when you die you are the same; The space between, is but an hour, The frail duration of a flower. Analysis and Appreciation: a) The poem is no doubt a graphic illustration of Freneaus poetic genius. b) Here we see Freneau moving his eyes from the relics of the Old World over to his own continent to enjoy the beauty that the American landscape is capable of offering to the observing and appreciative eyes. Analysis and Appreciation: c) Different from Copper, Hawthorn, and Henry James, Freneaus poem is an indication of the poets dedication to American subject matter as he examined the particular characteristics of the American countryside. retreat: place of seclusion; secluded place untouch’d: untouched; honey’d: honeyed; greet: personification No roving foot
