He grew up as a near-fearless warrior skilled in many weapons, one of which he is seen with in this picture, the rifled musket. He respects his forest home and all its inhabitants, hunting only what he needs to survive. And when it comes time to fire his trusty flintlock, he lives by the rule, One shot, one kill. Cooper’s writing style Cooper had wild imagination and creative power but his writing style is awkward. His plot(情节) is awkwardly organized and people can find disorder in his works. But he used local dialect of Indians, of the frontier men. His characters are very flat单调. He is more interested in the plot of story than in characters. Cooper’s Importance Cooper is a staunch坚固的,忠诚的 patriot. People called him American Scott. The patriotism or national pride made up the essence of his literary writings and made him a more American writer than Irving. Cooper was the first writer on such a large scale to portrait a vast picture of America with primary American color. He was the major writer to start frontier tradition and sea novel and the first successful socio-political novel. Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) A writer of psycho-romance A consummate romantic Hawthornes thoughts (1)Hawthornes view of Puritanism: Though Hawthorne himself was not a Puritan, he was greatly attracted by it and made the Puritan world or society as a historical background of he novel. Though he condemned Puritan concept of life in his works. He was greatly influenced by Calvinistic belief that human beings are basically depraved and corrupted, hence, they should obey God to atone for their sins.
