Learning Objectives 　　This unit is to tell you what makes up the Classical Chinese gardens Suzhou is not only a historic and cultural ancient city, but also a scenic tourist city famous in China and worldwide. The city, dotted with beautiful classical gardens full of poetic sceneries, has been reputed as the“garden city”over the centuries.The history of garden construction in Suzhou dated back to the times of the Wu State in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476), and elegant gardens were constructed in different dynasties. Since the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, the unique garden construction art has been formed and reached to such a height as described that the gardens are natural but elegant, meandering but exquisite, and like a big world hidden in a nut. Some famous gardens are: The Lion Forest Garden 狮子林 Humble Administrator’s Garden 拙政园 Lingering Garden 留园 Master of Nets Garden网师园 Pavilion of Surging Waves沧浪亭 The West Lake in Hangzhou is, first of all, a well-preserved natural garden. Since ancient times, large numbers of pavilions, terraces, kiosks and gardens within gardens, have been constructed on the isles and the lakeside, forming a string of classical gardens that are picturesquely scattered and integrated with the natural beauty of the lake. The West Lake is quintessence of traditional Chinese garden culture, yet it is also different from any private gardens in the lower Yangtze valley. There are ten major scenes and sights of the West Lake with exotic names: Spring Descending on the Su Dyke, Lotus Flowers Swaying in Gentle Breeze in the Quyuan Garden, Autumn Moon on the Calm Lake, Snow on the Broken Bridge, Orioles Singing in the Willows, Viewing Fish in Huagang Pond, Leifeng Pagoda in the Twilight of the Setting Sun, Twin Peaks Soaring into Clouds, Evening Bell Tolling at Nanping and Three Pools Mirroring the Moon.
