TheGoldenNotebookmainlyconsistsoftwoparts:onepartisaframenovelnamed TheFree
WomenwhichtellsofthedailylifeofAnnaandMolly;theotherpartisfivenotebooksofdifferent
colors: the black notebook records Anna’s life in Africa and her consideration about her work
Frontier of War;the red notebook is aboutAnna’spolitical activitieswithin the Britishpolitical
party; the yellow notebook isAnna’smanuscript ofher novel TheShadow of the Thirdwhich is
written according to her own love experiences; the blue notebook can be regarded as Anna’s
private diary which records her emotion and psychological activities about life; the golden
notebookisAnna’schoiceforherlifewhichsignifiesherrecoveryfrommentalbreakdown.
AsAnna’slifeexperiencescorrespondtotheexistentialismtheorytoagreatextent,thethesis
endeavors to combine the novel with the existentialism, aiming not only to provide a relatively
new way to understand the meanings of the novel, but also to show Lessing’s profound
consideration ofhuman existence.The thesis mainly uses three existentialismnotions: absurdity;
alienation;freechoiceandresponsibility.
