It is the capital of Hiroshima prefecture, and the chief industrial and population center of the Chugoku region. 3) It’s population : by the beginning of World War II, Hiroshima was the 7th largest city in Japan, with a population of 350,000. 4) Its’ importance: During the war, it was a regional army headquarter and a major rail center and producer of war materials. Now it is an important producer of iron and steel, motor vehicles, ships, machinery, sewing needles, paper, textiles and food products. 2. The first dropping of atomic bomb---“Little Boy” At 8: 15 a.m on August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb, called “Little Boy” was exploded near the center of Hiroshima, The explosion destroyed almost everything within a radius of 6000 to 8000 feet . Over 71,000 people were killed instantly. Survivors are still dying of leukemia(白血病), pernicious anema(恶性贫血症), and other diseases induced by radiation. 3. Why is the word of liveliest in the quotation mark? Hiroshima is very famous for the bomb explosion. A lot of people still suffer a lot from it. The word “liveliest” is put in quotation marks to show that this is what the city is said to be and the writer perhaps considers it ironic to use the word “liveliest ” to describe a city that had been atomized.
