The mean age of patients completing the SHARED survey was 50 years and 58% of respondents were male. The results showed that nearly every patient (90%) who completed the SHARED survey wanted to learn more about their condition. This apparent lack of information was supported by the finding that only 44% of patients had heard of the HbA1c test, the cornerstone of monitoring diabetes control. Snoek FJ, et al. Perceptions of seriousness and management of diabetes. Findings from the SHARED study (Survey comparing Healthcare professionals and patients to Assess Real perceptions of Diabetes issues. This could also reflect the need for more information expressed by the majority of patients. It was, however, reassuring to note that 62% of patients surveyed stated that their diabetes had improved noticeably since they started using insulin therapy. Snoek FJ, et al. Perceptions of seriousness and management of diabetes. Findings from the SHARED study (Survey comparing Healthcare professionals and patients to Assess Real perceptions of Diabetes issues. Diabetic Medicine 2006;23(s4):Abstract 699. The SHARED survey highlighted physician and patient reluctance to initiate insulin therapy, and the results showed that, on average, physicians delay insulin treatment for 8.1 years after diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. This delay occurred even though nearly half of patients (47%) would be willing to take insulin if it was recommended by their doctor. Furthermore, 91% of insulin-na?ve patients expressed a desire to become more involved in their treatment decisions. This would be facilitated by responding to the unmet need for more patient education about diabetes and its management. Snoek FJ, et al. Perceptions of seriousness and management of diabetes.
