Compared with the traditional serial communication, LAN communication technology is more convenient and fast. In this paper, a scheme for realizing local area network based on IPX protocol is proposed. It has been proved by practice that the IPX communication in the recorder has the advantages of high real time, high reliability and great application prospect. Key words: IPX protocol; LAN; fault recording; power system 1 Introduction Fault recorder is the main equipment in the transient process recording of power system. It records the fault in the process of electrical quantities and switching action, for the analysis of the cause of the fault, test the action of relay protection and automatic device operation, provides valuable information. At present, microcomputer based fault recorder with the upper computer and the lower computer (also known as some front-end and post processing machine) layered structure, wherein the lower machine is mainly responsible for data acquisition, waveform recording; fault analysis of PC is responsible for document processing and report printing function. The reliable data transmission between the upper and lower computer is the key to the reliable operation of the fault recorder. At present, most of our manufacturers adopt serial communication to realize data communication between upper and lower computer. Serial communication has great limitations in transmission speed, transmission distance and so on. By contrast, LAN technology has obvious advantages in these areas.
