ABSTRACT
Communication in realtime systems has to b e predictable b ecause unpredictable delays in
the delivery of messages can adversely aect the execution of tasks dep endent on these messages
In this pap er we develop a scheme for providing predictable interpro cess communication in
realtime systems with partially connected p ointtop oint interconnection networks which
provides guarantees on the maximum delivery time for messages This scheme is based on the
concept of a realtime channel a unidirectional connection b etween source and destination A
realtime channel has parameters which describ e the p erformance requirements of the source
destination communication eg from a sensor station to a control site Once such a channel
is established the communications subsystem guarantees that these p erformance requirements
will b e met In this pap er we concentrate on metho ds to compute guarantees for the deliv
ery time of messages b elonging to realtime channels We also address problems asso ciated
with allo cating buers for these messages and develop a scheme which preserves delivery time
guarantees
