To carry out quality education ,it?s necessary to develop our students? intelligence in an all-around way ,which is a social demand confronted by our modern education . English , as a foreign language , has its own character . So in order to promote the students? comprehensive quality , we should combine knowledge-teaching ,skill-developing together with intelligence-cultivating ,taking it as an important principle .
Intelligence generally includes observation ,memory ,thinking ,imagination ,attention and creation , among which thinking is the top . Apart from some inherent factors , the after-born education is among the leading effects on a person?s intelligence . Developing the students? intelligence in education means cultivating their ability to analyze and solve a problem individually . Now that thinking is the most important , the top priority in intelligence –cultivating is to develop the power to think , and the teaching of English gives it a great convenience . Not only is language a communication tool , but also a thinking tool . It is language that makes thinking come into being and further develop . Thinking is embodied in words , it occurs simultaneously . The process of English communication is also the process to exchange thoughts and ideas .
During the course of English teaching , we pass the basic skills to the students in the practice of listening , speaking , reading and writing .
Listening is an important means to get information . It?s our common sense that listening is the key to English . While thinking still remains the leading , how can we focus our thoughts on listening ? We can select some proper listening materials , get the students to predict and imagine what it will be , keeping them animated in the listening practice .
