In the case of stimuli occurring such as infection and trauma, microglia become activated, and then they produce many immune effector molecules, including interleukin, tumor necrosis factor, interferon -γ, reactive nitrogen species, reactive oxygen species, etc. These factors can mediate chronic inflammatory response, apoptosis, etc, which are the major reasons causing neurodegenerative diseases. In this article, we try to illustrate the mechanism how neural function is damaged by the microglial effector molecules, and introduce some current therapeutic approaches at the present time.
