Abstract The correct recognition of bar code image is prerequisite for correct digital leveling with a bar
code ruler. It is necessary to recover the badly blurred bar code signal to more ideal one when the stadia
is large and the direct edge detection method fails to detect bar code correctly. A regularization bar code
signal restoration algorithm is studied into which a penalty term is introduced to suppress the high
frequency oscillation of the solution according to the bar code signal characteristics. The experiment
shows that the recognition result of recovered bar code signal enables the correct measurement at
distance 62m and the measurement results reach properly high precision.
