The main advantage you get with an S-video signal is that color information is sent to the display device separately. The step of separating the color and luminance or Y is gone from the process. This process usually removes the “COMB” or NOTCH” filter from the processing chain. Now the display device is down to a 3 step image creation process. 1. First we decode the chroma information out into R, G, and B 2. Next we strip the sync off of the Y channel and break it out into separate horizontal and vertical information. 3. Then finally the Brightness or luminance information is added back to the RGB information in order to create the picture that we see on screen.
