[Abstract] the relevance theory (Sperber, Wilson, 1986/1995) provides a useful tool for the study of verbal communication, including verbal humor communication. These studies consider the production of humorous effects as the difference between the maximum relevance and the optimal relevance. Although the relevance theory of speech acts has strong explanatory power, but the particularity of humor can not determine the understanding process of it is too stylized, it cannot explain the sporadic humor and uncertainty. Moreover, both the relevance theory and the incongruity theory of humor interpretation is a member of the same language and cultural groups in the process of understanding of the national language, few previous studies involving a language and cultural groups to understand from another language and cultural groups of verbal humor. All these have led to the study of the specific English verbal humor comprehension process from the perspective of Chinese EFL learners, and further explained the reasons for the failure of English comprehension.
