Since 1996, Canon has promoted management under the Excellent Global Corporation Plan. This year marks the start of Phase V of the plan, a five year initiative that ends in 2020, during which we will take on new challenges. Last year, we concluded Phase IV holding Canon EXPO in New York, Paris, and Tokyo, as always in the final year of a five-year plan. In the future society of 2020, lifestyles and work patterns will further evolve and new value will be created one after another. Canon considers it its mission to offer new value through such measures as supporting the expansion of visual culture and business innovation. Revolutionary technologies and products to realize this were introduced at this event. Today, I will review Phase IV, which ended last year, and then talk about our plans regarding how we intend to embrace the challenge of new growth in Phase V, which starts this year. In 2010, the global economy experienced a V-shaped recovery following the Lehman crisis. Viewing this as “the First Year in a New Era of Growth,” we entered Phase IV with the aim of expanding operations and joining the ranks of the world’s top 100 companies in terms of major management indicators. Initially, we expected favorable growth, however, the global economy proved more challenging and we were forced to press on into headwinds. It was at this time that we decided to swiftly make a major change in course, from a business strategy that focused primarily on business scale expansion to one focused on further strengthening our financial structure, in order to endure a global economic recession and facilitating great strides in the future. Although, we could not achieve our initial financial targets, the five year period proved extremely meaningful as we looked ahead to the future and implemented two major strategic measures to support our business transformation.
