57 1 2006 2 4 The Role of the Continuity and Processing of Experience in Character Development Yih-Nan Lee Professor, Department of Civic Education Leadership National Taiwan Normal University Abstract Based on the concept that continuity of experience is the goal as well as the means of education, and that the process of undergoing experiences is the dynamic foundation of character development for students, this article aims to clarify the methods of experiential thinking, learning, and reflective practice. It also explores the function of experience in therapeutic approaches to teaching and learning, and examines the role of focused per- ception, internalization and externalization of experience, and transformational thinking and behavior, in order to provide a theoretical framework for the processing of educational activities on the part of teachers and learners. The intention is to provide professionals with a means of growing through experience. Also, references to strategies of advising and counseling, with the goal of character development, will be included. K
