As the time passes by, the insulation of a transformer is degrading, and the paper separate out furfural, According to Power Equipment Preventive Test Procedures for Oil-Filled Transformer, the test period for furfural content is described as “if it is necessary”. But comparing the methods of ageing diagnosis of insulation, it is found that most effective way to evaluate the state of insulation ageing is to measure the furfural content. After building a linear mathematical model and analyzing the connection with furfural content and degree of polymerization, a mathematical formula can be presented to forcast the remainder of a transformer life time. The outcome is that we can link the result of the test for furfural content with the oil chromatogram to evaluate the state of solid insulation of a transformer to decide if the transformer should be still used or not.
