Ernest Shackleton How Failure Became Success Talk about the advertisement I think it’s an inhospitable place, and it seems there is full of danger and no way to come back. I think no one can be so brave as to reply it. How Failure Became Success 2. Read the passage and explain the meaning of the title. Shackleton and his men failed to walk across Antarctica via the South Pole, but he succeeded in rescuing his men. Careful reading Choose question words from the box. Write two comprehension questions to ask another student. How? Why? Where? When? Who? What? How long / many? Example: When did the Endurance leave for Antarctica? How did Shackleton find the crew for his ship? How did they travel to the Antarctic? Why did Shackleton want to go to the Antarctic? Where did the men set up camp after the boat sank? When did they set out for the Antarctic? Who were surprised when Shackleton and his men came down the mountain? What happened to the Endurance? How long did they survive on the ice sheet? How many hours did they have to walk over the mountains to reach the camp? (In a ship called the Endurance) (Maybe for honour and recognition.) (On a sheet of ice.) (On August 8th, 1914) (The whale hunters.) (It sank into the sea.) (Five months.) (36 hours.) Read the passage carefully and answer your questions. Shackleton was not a good captain. He made bad decisions which put the lives of his men in great danger. Although the voyage of the Endurance failed, Shackleton saved all his men and this is the most important thing to remember.
