Course Title CURE 2151 Arabic for Beginners I 基礎阿拉伯文I First Term 2017 Thursday 2:30 pm to 5:15 pm at NAH 213 (213 Humanities Building, New Asia College) Lecturer: Imam Yang Xingwen 楊興文 (ICA) Assisted by Ms. Asiah Yang 楊玉娜 (CSIC) Course Description Arabic is an international and influential language: the official language of 22 Arab countries and one of the six official languages in the United Nations. Besides, Arabic is closely associated with Islam, that around 1.2 billion Muslims in the world believe. The sacred book, Qur’an, is written in Arabic. Modern Standard Arabic is derived from the language of the Qur’an and widely taught in universities and used in business, government and media. Learning Arabic helps students widen their horizon by exploring a new culture it represents. This course is intended for students with no prior knowledge of Arabic. It aims to teach the rudiments of Modern Standard Arabic language and will cover various topics related to daily life conversation in Arabic including greetings, introducing oneself and basic conversation related to school, family and so on. Apart from daily conversation, the course will also introduce grammar and syntax in order to develop basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Arabic. The textbook of the course is 《新編阿拉伯語第一冊》(Details below). Other supplementary materials and websites will also be used to extend students’ exposure to Arabic language and culture.
